21st Century Learning Styles and Mobile Technologies (Dede, Chris)

Description: Emerging interactive media are shaping users' attributes and social patterns into "neomillennial" learning styles: Today's students seek situations that interweave face-to-face interactions with shared virtual experiences. In particular, wireless mobile devices (cellphones, portable gaming platforms, personal digital assistants) provide the opportunity to overlay digital data and simulated experience as students interact with the physical world. This session describes lessons learned from two educational "augmented reality" projects and discusses implications for instructional design.

Dr. Dede, I am interested in coming to your workshop and meeting you. I have read about your work, including the River City Project and 2003 article, "Design-Based Research Strategies for Studying Situated Learning in a Multi-User Virtual Environment," while completing my doctoral dissertation this past year. While my doctoral research argues more for instructional designs based on situated cognition rather than on situativity, I appreciate the work you and your colleagues have done in the area of learning technologies and the ways in which they shape education.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Attached is a draft of my Powerpoint for this session. The actual Powerpoint may be slightly different, but this gives a sense of what I will be discussing. Hope you find the ideas interesting and decide to come to the session.

I'm very disappointed I could not get to CUE to present this and other sessions. I was trapped at DFW by bad weather; hundreds of canceled flights stranded thousands of people, almost all for at least two days. I did my best, including looking for flights to LA or San Diego from which I could drive to Palm Springs, but most were canceled and everything remaining was booked solid. When the flight I finally found was belatedly canceled, I was unable to get to the conference.

Sorry -- hopefully next year!
