Description: River City is a science curriculum, grades 6 to 9, based on a virtual world rather like the Internet games many students find so engaging. The curriculum is designed to help all students learn, but particularly low performing pupils, paradoxically by giving them more complex academic challenges rather than simplifying instruction. This talk will demonstrate and discuss how taking on a digital identity in an immersive, collaborative simulation can help real students to learn sophisticated inquiry skills and deep, standards-based subject matter. Attached is a draft Powerpoint for this session. The actual Powerpoint may be slightly different. I hope that you like the ideas and decide to attend...
I'm very disappointed I could not get to CUE to present this and other sessions. I was trapped at DFW by bad weather; hundreds of canceled flights stranded thousands of people, almost all for at least two days. I did my best, including looking for flights to LA or San Diego from which I could drive to Palm Springs, but most were canceled and everything remaining was booked solid. When the flight I finally found was belatedly canceled, I was unable to get to the conference.
I was so sorry you couldn't make the conference. I was very much looking forward to your "River City" session, as mine was on Second Life. I would very much like to know what other virtual worlds have to offer classroom teachers and students. Please keep me on your "mail to" list (if there is such a thing!).
