Hello everyone,
My name is Barry Bakin and I'm an in-classroom instructor of ESL to adult level students at Pacoima Skills Center (an LAUSD school) in the northeast San Fernando Valley in the mornings. I'm a Teacher Advisor every afternoon for the ESL Program Office of the Division of Adult and Career Education. In that capacity, one of my main areas of responsibility is promoting the integration of technology within the ESL curriculum by adult-level ESL instructors.

I'd like to invite you to attend a hands-on workshop I'll be giving Saturday morning titled "Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Projects Students and Teachers Love!" While my typical "audience" for these projects is obviously adult level students, the projects themselves are adaptable to most any age group and require only minimal computer skill levels. (That's for both the students and the instructor!) My hands-on workshops are geared to minimal-to-moderate skill level practitioners, but more advanced practitioners might also find activities of value that they're not already familiar with.

I would like to learn Powerpoint and Excel again. I am an adult entering the work field in a new line of employment.

I would like to know if you have any classes during the week in the San Fernando Valley for adults?

How much is the training/ class and is there a completion certificate available?

I am English Speaking.

Hi Joan,
Community Adult Schools and Skills Centers in the San Fernando Valley offer business education classes which would include software applications at basic through expert levels. One can obtain for example the MOS certification (Microsoft Office Specialist) in Word and Excel at my site. Typical costs for a semester are around $50; there are fee exemptions for senior citizens (over 60) and certain other categories involving verified public assistance. It's best to call the individual schools for specific course and fee information. Other sites with classes in the valley include West Valley Occupational Center, North Valley Occupational Center, El Camino Real Community Adult School, Reseda Community Adult School, and North Hollywood Adult Learning Center. Contact information can be found at http://esl.adultinstruction.org/school_list.htm
