Can anyone give me thoughts on using Moodles in the classroom. I have only heard a brief description of what they do, but that is about. I guess the question would be as follows. How would I get a moodle set up in my district for teacher/student use?
Thanks,
Michelle

You can use Moodle at many levels: as a webpage and as an online learning community.

To have a Moodle course you either need to set up a computer to run Moodle, pay a webhosting company to set up a Moodle page, or get your district IT to set up Moodle.
For 1 teacher you can search "Moodle Hosting" and find a company. I have used siteground ($72/year), or you can pick an official Moodle partner Moodlerooms or Remote-learner.net.
Our district has set up a computer to be a Moodle server, but then we decided to have Remote-learner handle it for us (about $1/user/year).

Once you get it set up, then there is a lot to discuss about how to use it.

Our school uses Moodle comprehensively. I have one coure in American Government completely hosted on Moodle. It is unattractive but highly functional. I don't use the interactive features, but it is very easy to provide files and links through Moodle.

Take a look at EdZone (http://www.k12hsn.org/edzone). They just unveiled a Moodle component. It's easy to sign up and get your own Moodle instance to play with. The advantage here is that you don't have to do any installation or maintenance. I had no prior experience with Moodle but with my own and a few hours reading online I felt ready to show others.

I looked over the other day to find my 10-year-old typing away at the PC with three instant message boxes open on the screen. She has not been a big IM-er, so it surprised me. The IM tool was not Yahoo! Messenger or AIM, but Moodle, the free, open-source educational software package her fifth grade teacher is using.

Michelle, I went to a workshop at the TechEd Conference in Ontario this past Tuesday. It an awesome tool for setting up an online learning community. The speaker, who was a professor at a community college in Sacramento, uses it for his online class to post information, handouts, tests & quizzes, forums, and links.

Moodle is practical for collaborative learning, and we've used it.

Irene Griffis and I are investigating Moodle for our classes. It's kind of like Blackboard, but it's free. You can set up students, assignments, grades, etc... You can use this free site:
