Irene Griffis and I are investigating Moodle for our classes. It's kind of like Blackboard, but it's free. You can set up students, assignments, grades, etc... You can use this free site: http://www.k12hsn.org/calaxy/blogs.php/calaxy/2009/04/01/tra

I looked over the other day to find my 10-year-old typing away at the PC with three instant message boxes open on the screen. She has not been a big IM-er, so it surprised me. The IM tool was not Yahoo! Messenger or AIM, but Moodle, the free, open-s…

Summer is Over

Wow, where did the time fly??? I haven't done much with technology except develop a wiki page for my school as a forum for discussion about a new PLC strategy we will be implementing this school year. I am the co-chair for this project and hope to encourage teachers to use the discussion as a means of communication for the process of PLC. We'll see.

I did a lot of traveling this summer. Back to Oregon again to visit my family was my favorite of course. We also traveled to Arizona, Newport Coast… Continue

Summer Is Here!

Well, summer is here and school is over. Time to catch up on all of those projects. Also, time to learn about new technology. The one I am most interested to know more about is Moodle. I barely know anything about it. A year ago, I knew nothing about wiki's, and now I have my own wiki. So, I guess it is time to learn about Moodle's. For me, connecting with my students is where it is at. It seems like Moodle's do just that.

Starting Out

Ok, this is really a great opportunity to connect with other Computer Using Educators. Who would have thought that the wave of the future would be blogs and wikis, two words that did not exist until recently? I remember the days of Apple 2e's and MAC Plus with an external hard drive and the VAX mainframe that took up the size of a bedroom. I remember trying to decide whether or not to order a 4 MB memory upgrade or to be aggressive and order the 8 MB memory. Now I can carry around a Gigabyte fla… Continue

Hi Michelle,

With your interest in Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.

I am not really interested in a board position at this time, but I would love to be more involved in the organization. It just seems that if we the CUE Conference is in our own backyard, we might look at having stronger representation. There are a lot of talented teachers here in the valley that we need to tap into. Somehow we need to get the word out. That may mean communicating and collaborating with the 3 school districts, as well as the colleges in Coachella Valley. I would be willing to help at the CUE Conference or any workshops.

Could you delete my other "page" I seem to have joined twice? Thanks. I would also like to volunteer at the CUE conference, where do I sign up?

About Moodle, there is no cost per student. It is a free course management system like Blackboard. You install it on a server and it's ready to go.

Sure! Once you get in world, getting around is quite easy. You can use your map to jump or teleport to any landmark in your inventory. You can also search on the map, though this is a little difficult until you know some places you might want to visit.

You can also teleport by double clicking on any landmark in your inventory. I find this to be helpful because you can create folders to organize your landmarks (and other inventory).

You create a landmark by pulling down on the World menu and Create a Landmark here. A window pops up describing the new landmark. The landmark is stored in your inventory and will show up on your map list.

There are several ways to "discover" new sims. First, you might meet someone who is willing to go ahead to a sim to show you around. In this case, he will teleport you after he gets there. Be sure to create a landmark before you leave where you are if you might want to find again. Or the other person might just give you a landmark and send you off on your own.

Another way to explore is to use Second Life's search feature. Popular places have their own tab in the search engine, but only a few sims are listed as popular. Search under places for more exhaustive lists. One way to explore is to go on a quest. Search for something that interests you. Maybe you are interested in music. A search for musical instruments will bring up lots of interesting stores and clubs to visit.

Another way to discover is to read the favorites on other avatars' profiles. You may discover something that is a common interest so you get a landmark and a potential friend.

I hope this helps.
